EXCERPT FROM THE STUDY
With the advent of social media, it is rare for an event to happen without being unveiled or exposed through social networking sites. The EndSARS movement began in 2017, as Nigerian youth shared experiences of police brutality via social media and demonstrated in several cities to call for SARS’s dissolution.
At the dawn of the protest, Nigeria's youth population utilized their social media handles to share their experiences and video evidence of how members of SARS engaged in siphoning, beating, kidnapping, murder, theft, rape, torture, unlawful arrests, humiliation, unlawful detention, extrajudicial killings, and extortion of citizens. As if social media weren't enough, in October, young people in Lagos State took to the streets to protest SARS brutality in the country, using the hashtag # EndSARS.
The EndSars peaceful protest took an unprecedented phase as it turned violent, pernicious, obnoxiously brutal and bloody. The peaceful protest met its abrupt end when it was dispersed by the Nigerian Army, who shot at the armless protesters, which was recorded as the worst massacre committed by the military in the history of Nigeria. This cruel bloodshed at Lekki tollgate incited the youth as they would not give up, hence prompting them to destroy different public institutions, private and public businesses, and burn down the residences of public servants. The persistence of military attacks to quell youth violence and the ongoing loss of lives prompted youths to flee the streets and resort to social media platforms, where they alerted the online community all over the world while attaching videos of the massacre with hashtags such as "# Lekkimassacre" and "# Lekkishooting," prompting various governments around the world to condemn such impunity. " However, owing to the fact that there are scanty studies on ENDSARS, only a few have been channeled towards youth violence and social media. Thus, in a bid to fill this gap, the researchers decided to consider this research aimed at examining social media and youth violence using the ENDSARS protests as case study.
